It was a stormy night in Narnia and the High King couldn’t sleep. He slipped out of bed and wandered around the empty halls of Cair Paravel. He walked up to a large open window and cast a dreamy eye on the ocean in front of him. They events of the day before replayed in his overworked mind. He had given permission for his sister Susan to marry Prince Philip. He just couldn’t believe that he was already giving away a member of his beloved family. A small tear slowly ran down his cheek as he continued to stare out the window. The stormy wind blew threw his blonde hair. Suddenly, he heard a warm comforting voice behind him. “Is something wrong King Peter?” asked the familiar voice. Peter turned to see Aslan standing behind him in the shadowy hallway. “No, I just couldn’t sleep.” He said forcing a smile. “Maybe your mind is busy thinking about the sister you will soon have to part with?” “Why did I think I could hide anything from you Aslan?” Peter said laughing. Aslan gave a small chuckle. “Don’t worry about Susan. She is extremely smart and Philip is a good man. She will be alright.” He said in the most reassuring tone. “And now that she’s getting married you too should keep your eyes open for a suitable wife.” “I know Aslan, but I just don’t think I’m ready for all that yet. I feel like I’m just getting used to being in charge around here.” Peter said honestly. “Peter, you have been High King for five years now. You are twenty years of age. Surely you are used to your responsibilities by now.” Said Aslan. “I’m still scared at times.” Peter answered putting his head down. “Well that is natural. You have the weight of Narnia on your shoulders. How could you not fear at times? But you cannot hide in your fears. Do not let love pass you by.” “Thank you Aslan. I cherish our talks, they make me feel stronger.” Aslan smiled wholeheartedly at the young king. “Now Peter, you must try to sleep.” “Yes, I supposed you’re right. Goodnight then.”
Peter woke the next morning feeling extremely refreshed. He got up, dressed quickly, and went down to the dining hall to meet his siblings breakfast. “Well look who finally decided to join us.” Teased his thirteen year old sister Lucy. The other laughed at their sister’s joke. Peter looked confused as he took his seat at the head of the table. “Is it later?” he asked as a servant quickly came to his side with food. “Only about three hours later then you usually sleep.” Commented Susan. “They wanted to wait for you to start to eat but I couldn’t take it anymore.” Said Edmund as he continued to fill his mouth with fruit. Peter rolled his eyes, “Thank you Ed. I really appreciate the sentiment.” “As if you would hold off eating breakfast if I overslept three hours!” he said defensively. “Peace you two, goodness!” Susan said with an annoyed tone. “Did you try to wake me?” Peter asked curiously. “Ed did yell in your ear a few times but you just wouldn’t stir.” Said Lucy. “Oh yes, ha…how funny. I thought I was dreaming up that horrendous sound.” Said Peter with a laugh. “Well you better eat fast. Oreius wanted to speak with you about training the new recruits.” Said Edmund. “Ah yes, a king’s work is never done.” “Oh you poor High King I feel so sorry for you.” Teased Edmund. Peter ignored him, grabbed a muffin and ran out of the room to meet Oreius.
Bella was lying on a couch on her porch enjoying the cool breeze. She was tucked away under a beautiful flowering tree. She absolutely loved this spot of the castle. She was all alone surrounded by glorious smells, sounds, and colors. She was deep in her book when she heard footsteps coming through her bedroom. She hoped it was Victoria or a servant coming to tell her that her father was awake, but to her disappointment it was Lionel. “Ah, there you are my love.” He said sappy sweet tone. “Hello Lionel.” She answered quietly. He sat on the edge of the couch starting at her intently. “Has your father spoken to you about his wishes?” He just had to ruin her perfect solitude, “Yes we spoke.” “I just wanted to tell you that I know how hard it is going to be for you to lose your father. There is no rush to get married right after. We will both go through the proper mourning time and then we will begin to discuss wedding plans.” He told her as he held her hand.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He just seemed much too comfortable with the idea of her father’s death. “Do we have to speak of my father’s death before it even takes place?” she asked with anger in her voice. “No my dear, of course not. That was very insensitive of me. I will leave you alone to rest.” He kissed hand and left. She began to feel sad and upset as she pondered his words. She wasn’t ready for everything that was about to be thrust upon her. After several hours out in the blazing sun training the new recruits with Oreius King Peter was feeling hot and tired. He was almost at the steps that led up to his room where he knew he would be instantly met by ten or fifteen female anxious servants who would be anxious to “help” him draw his bath. He paused looking at another set of steps that led down to the beach. A quirky smile spread onto his face as he decided to bound down the stone steps that would take him to the sandy beach that he adored. When he reached the beach he threw off his boots and walked into the freezing ocean water. He let out a heavy sigh of relief. “Ah, this is so much better than any bath could ever be.”
He pulled his tunic over his head revealing his bare chest and laid down where the water could completely cover his tired, overworked body. He put his head down in the sand and began to soak up the warm sunlight. He was trying to remember what caused him to sleep so peacefully the night before. He knew he dreamt, but he couldn’t exactly remember all of it. He remembered being on his horse and being physically attracted to a certain area near the border of Narnia and Archenland. When he reached this mysterious spot he saw a beautiful stream and on the edge of the stream was a large, imposing tree. Under the tree he saw the figure of a women with long, flowing blonde hair. She was reading. She was just about to notice him when… Peter was abruptly distracted from his day dream when a wave came over his face. “What the…” he shot up from his comfortable spot in the sand. He laughed a little when he realized what had happened. “PETER!” He could hear Susan’s voice calling for him up in the castle. “Reality calls.” He said to himself as he picked up his tunic and boots.
Bella woke in the middle of the night with an awful pit in her stomach. She knew even before Victoria entered the room. “Bella? Sweetie are you awake?” she heard her voice. “I know Tor, it’s my father.” She said revealing the agony she felt in her voice. “He only has a few more minutes. He’s asking for you.” Bella flew from her room to her father’s. She fell on her knees next to his bed and took his hand. “Bella my love…” he struggled to speak. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to leave you now.” Tears were starting to roll down Bella’s face. “Oh father. Please don’t’ say things like that.” “Lionel will take good care of you. I’m sorry I went back on my promise but I have to do what is best for you my sweet Bella.” He said sadly. “Father, don’t worry about me.” She tried to sound strong and unmovable. “I know angel, I will miss you too.” With that Bella dropped her act. She put her head down at his side and cried uncontrollably. “Father, please don’t leave me…please.” She pleaded amidst the tears. He stroked her head. “I love you my dear girl, more than anything in this world.” And with that he was gone. Logged

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peter couldn’t get away from Susan’s nagging no matter where he went. “But Peter, you aren’t even making an effort to find a wife.” “Susan, how many times must we have this conversation? If I fall in love then wonderful but I’m not going to go out knocking on doors looking for someone.” He said as he continued to try to walk away from her. “I didn’t mean knock on doors silly! I was thinking along the lines of a very large ball, with a lot of ladies.” She said sweetly. He stopped and turned to face her, “Will you leave me alone if I say yes?” he teased. She nodded her head and put on her best begging face. “Fine.” He said relenting to her face. She screamed and threw her arms around his neck. “I promise you it will be glorious, and even you will have fun.” She said glowing. He rolled his eyes as he pulled her arms off of his neck. “Alright now go plan or whatever it is you girls do.” He said giving her a gentle push away from him. He turned and continued to walk as he smiled. He loved making his sister happy, even if it meant he would have to attend a ball. He walked down to the stable and asked for his horse. Nothing relaxed him like a good ride.
It had been almost a week since Bella’s father died. She had been empty ever since that night. Nothing excited her, made her happy, or even made her smile. She was quietly gliding around the castle dressed in all black. Everywhere she went there was another sympathetic face, another “I’m so sorry”. She couldn’t get away. And what was worse was Lionel was constantly at her side. One day she was sitting in her room crying softly, but glad to be alone. She heard a small tap on the door that she knew was Victoria. “Come in.” she said as she wiped her wet eyes. “How are you Bella?” she asked with a worried look. Bella shrugged her shoulders. She didn’t really know how good or bad she was. She barely felt anything. “I have an idea. It’s simply gorgeous out today. Get out of that awful black dress, put some riding clothes on, take a book, and go find a peaceful place. Get lost in your reading hmm?” “I can’t.” “Why not? It will do you good. Come on, just put something simple on. Maybe one of those dresses we used to wear when we wanted to sneak into the city unnoticed?” She took out one of the dresses she was referring to and laid it out on the bed. Bella continued to stare out the window. “Bella? Please, just get outside. You need the fresh air.” Bella finally agreed. She just wanted to be left alone and the further away from the castle she was the better. She put on the plain dress, saddled her horse and rode off. She had one spot near the border with Narnia that she absolutely adored. She used to ride there as a child. Only her father and Victoria knew where it was. After just about a half an hour of riding she arrived at a beautiful stream. Alongside the stream was a large tree that shaded an extensive area of grass. Bella settle herself under the tree and opened her book. For the first time since her father’s death she was feeling some relief.
Peter had been riding for about two hours. He loved nothing more than galloping on his horse through the fields of Narnia. He had just escaped as Susan began to spread the word of her ball. He just didn’t feel like facing the plans so he rode farther away than he usually did. Before long he realized he was nearing the border with Narnia and Archenland. All the sudden he felt that pull, like he had in his dream. He wanted to go to this one specific spot and he knew exactly where it was. As he slowly trotted up to it he saw his dream play out in from of him. He dismounted his horse and stood in front of a beautiful stream. Next to the stream was the tree from his dream, and low and behold underneath it was the girl. She was deep in her reading. He saw her dress and assumed she was simply a peasant girl resting in the shade of the mighty tree. He felt drawn to her. He saw her beautiful blonde hair falling all over her shoulders and back. As he took a step closer his foot snapped a twig and she quickly looked up. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.” He said. His voice immediately calmed her. She wasn’t afraid of him at all. She saw kindness in his deep blue eyes and strength in his mannerism. “No, you didn’t. I just thought I was alone that’s all.” She replied nicely. “Forgive the intrusion. I shall continue on my way.” He started to walk away. “No! Don’t leave. I would actually be glad of the company.” She gave him a warm smile.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He felt welcomed by her smile. He walked closer and sat down next to her. Now he could see the rest of her features perfectly. She was very beautiful. Her eyes were striking, but he saw the sadness behind them. “What is your name?” he asked her. “Annabelle, yours?” “Peter.” Interestingly enough neither of them felt it necessary to give their full names and titles. They each assumed that they other was a commoner. “I live in Narnia. I just decided to take a little ride today. I needed some air and an escape from reality.” He said honestly. “I can understand that more than you know. I live in Archenland. We must be exactly on the border right here.” “Yes, I believe we are. What are you reading?” he asked pointing at the book in her hands. “Oh, just a silly fiction that my father gave to me a few years ago.” She said trying to hide the pain of talking about her father. “Does your father enjoy reading?” Peter asked casually. “Yes…well, he did.” She said sadly. “Did?” Now he was starting to understand the sadness in her eyes. “He just recently died. We were very close.” “Oh I’m terribly sorry to hear that.” He said regretting that he brought it up. “I have to put it behind me eventually.” She said looking into his caring eyes. He smiled at her and suddenly her heart was light.
They sat under that tree talking for hours. They covered every topic possible, but all the while managing not to mention their positions in life. Bella told him of her growing up experiences and Peter told her all about living in Narnia with magical creatures. “So is it true? I mean all they say about the great Lion?” she asked feeling very at ease with Peter now. “Aslan? Oh yes, he is incredible. I owe everything to him, even my life.” Peter answered seriously. All the sudden they both noticed the light going out of the sky. The sun was beginning to set. “Oh my goodness, it is late. I will be missed if I don’t start back.” Bella said. “Ah yes, my sister is going to be very upset with me if I don’t return as well.” He said as he stood up. There was an awkward silence. “It was lovely to meet you Peter.” She said to him as she packed up her horse. “Likewise, have a safe journey home.” “You as well.” She said smiling sweetly. She mounted her horse and started riding back. She turned around and gave him one last glance, and then began to gallop. She snuck into her room about an hour later to find Victoria waiting for her. “Bella! I’ve been so worried about you.” She said taking her into a big hug. Bella looked dazed. “What is wrong?” Victoria asked. “Absolutely nothing. I’m wonderful.” She quickly spilled her story about meeting Peter.
Peter rode back into Cair Paravel after dark. He got an earful from Susan as soon as he stepped in. “Peter Pevensie! Where have you been all day long? You just ran off without telling anyone where you would be! I was worried sick!” she shouted. “Susan, I’m safe and I’m tired.” He said simply. Edmund and Lucy heard their sister’s voice and came to see what the trouble was. Lucy ran right into Peter’s arms when she saw he was back. “Peter, you’re home!” she said as he held her tight. “Nice to see you too Lu. Now girls I need to talk to Ed for a moment. I will see you both in the morning.” He kissed Lucy’s head and Susan’s cheek even though she was still glaring at him. “What is going on Peter?” asked Edmund concerned as to why his older brother requested a private talk with him. “Ed, I have to tell you something in confidence.” ********** Victoria’s eyes were wide while listening to Bella’s enchanting story. “So he was wonderful?” she asked. “Oh Tor, he was delightful. I have never felt so fulfilled and comforted from a simple conversation.” ********** “But she is just a commoner?” asked Edmund giving his brother a confused look. “I suppose so, but she was perfect. I have never felt so comfortable with a complete stranger.” ********** “But you’ll never see him again.” Pointed out Victoria. “Maybe not, but there is the hope that he will return to that spot again.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “And what if she does come back Pete? What then? You bring her back to Cair Paravel and make her High Queen?” Peter stared back at his brother thinking. ********** “I didn’t even tell him who I was.” Said Bella as she changed into her nightgown. ********** “What!” Edmund shouted. “You didn’t tell her you were the High King of Narnia!” “I know, it was bad judgment. I just didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable.” “Well you’re in a mess now Peter.” “Thanks for all the advice Ed. Look, just don’t tell Susan. I’ll tell her when the time is right.” “Alright, goodnight you idiot.” ********** “Goodnight Tor.” Bella said she climbed into bed. “Goodnight love.” She returned as she left the room. Bella turned on her side in bed and looked at the bright moonlight shining into her room. “Goodnight Peter.” She whispered. ********** Peter laid on his back in his bed looking at the moonlight flooding his room. “Goodnight Annabelle.” He whispered.
Bella woke early the next morning with a smile on her face. She had already decided to go back to the spot. Even if Peter wasn’t there it would still be a pleasant relief from the castle. Victoria came in to help her slip into a dress for breakfast. “Did you sleep last night?” she asked Bella as she was buttoning up the back of her dress. “Yes, surprisingly well. It was the first night I slept all the way through since my father died.” “Well that’s nice to hear. What are you planning on doing after breakfast?” she asked knowing what she was getting at. Bella smirked. “I was thinking about taking a ride.” She turned around and looked at Victoria who was smiling back. “What a lovely idea.” She said. “Now go eat, Lionel is waiting for you.” She gave Bella a gentle push out the door. Bella slowly made her way down to the dinning hall to another drawn out mean with her fiancé. She sat down at her place as her servants began to fill her plate with food. Lionel was looking down at his plate while he ate. “Where did you go yesterday?” Lionel asked as he continued to look down. “Oh, I took a ride.” “You were gone for a long time.” He said giving her a suspicious look. She needed to think of something. “I got a bit lost on the way home.” She lied. “Were you planning on riding again today?” he asked. “I was thinking about it, yes.” She said as she ate. “I will go over a route with you on the map before you leave, or I will go with you if you’d like.” He stated.
“The map will be enough I’m sure thank you.” She snapped. She quietly sat and listened to him as he showed her where he wanted her to ride. It took almost an hour. She knew he was purposely dragging it out because he was suspicious. Finally he let her go. She quickly changed into another simple dress and began to ride. ********** “Peter, I’m sending out the invitations today.” Said Susan at breakfast that morning. “For what?” he asked. “Peter! The ball!” she shouted. “I know Susan, I know. I was teasing you.” He said while laughing. Lucy and Edmund laughed at their sister’s face. She couldn’t be teased when she was stressed about planning an event. “I’m sorry Susan. I’m very glad you’re sending out the invitations today.” He said while he held her hand. “So when is this lovely evening set for?” “Next Friday, just over a week.” She answered. “Oh my, are you going to be ready by then?” asked Lucy. “Lu, it’s Susan. She lives for this sort of thing.” Teased Edmund. “I just want to put on a nice ball that’s all.” Peter stood up to leave the table. “Well I’m going to take a ride.” “You were just out all day yesterday though.” Protested Lucy. “I know Lu, but I’ll be back earlier today than I was yesterday and when I get back you and I will spend some time together.” Lucy nodded excitedly as Peter smiled back. “Please don’t stay out all day Peter. I know you said you won’t but you tend to get carried away when you’re out riding.” Said Susan. “I will only be gone a few hours. I’ll see you all when I get back.” Bella settled in under the tree and began to read waiting and hoping for Peter to show up again. It seemed like she had been reading for hours when she finally heard a rustling next to her. She looked up and saw a familiar face. “Hello stranger.” Said Peter.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bella was happy to see Peter standing in front of her. She stood up to greet him “Why hello. Nice to see you again. It’s a beautiful day for a ride isn’t it?” she said innocently. “Yes it is.” He returned. They smiled at each other as they looked deep in to their eyes. Bella had to break the stare. “Would you like to sit Peter?” she asked. He nodded, tied his horse up next to hers and sat. They were completely comfortable with in each other within minutes. They began to talk about anything and everything again. For some reason they felt telling each other all of their thoughts. “Well I needed to get away again today because my sister is planning a large event and she gets a bit testy when she is under pressure.” Peter said. Bella giggled, “I’m sure it’s just because she wants it to turn out wonderful. Where exactly in Narnia do you live?” Peter tried to think of something quickly. He didn’t want to tell her that he was the King. That would make her feel so awkward and inferior. “Um…near the ocean.” He answered vaguely.
“Anywhere near Cair Paravel?” Bella asked. “Oh so you’ve heard of Cair Paravel then?” “Of course I have I am after all…” she was about to say “a princess” when she stopped herself. She didn’t want Peter to know that she wasn’t a commoner. That would make him feel so small and unimportant. “Well I just mean that everyone has heard of Cair Paravel.” She finished. He looked a bit confused but decided to let it go. “So why are you constantly running away from home?” he asked. “Well I mentioned my father to you, everything has been awful since his death. There are so many sympathy’s directed at me all the time.” “That is only because people are concerned for you.” He said. “I know, but I tire of it sometimes. Someone is always sorry. I usually just want to be left alone with my books.” She teased. “I have never met someone who enjoys reading more than you.” He stated. “What do you like to read?” “Everything. I can soak up information from any type of book.” She replied. They talked for about two hours before Peter began to get nervous that Susan would kill him if he returned late. “I hate to say that I must be going.” He said.
“I should really head back to. I worried quiet a few of my friends yesterday.” She said with a laugh. Peter held the reigns of her horse while she mounted. He looked up into her beautiful face and needed reassurance that he would see her again. He continued to hold the horse still. “When can I see you again?” he asked with a pleading tone. She smiled out of the corner of her mouth. She wanted to see him again too, and soon. “Well I think if we both disappear again tomorrow our families will become suspicious, but if we snuck away the day after I think we could get away unnoticed.” She said. He smiled up at her. “The day after tomorrow then. I look forward to it. Goodbye Bella.” “Goodbye Peter.” She gave him one last sweet look and then began her ride home. He sighed as she rode away. “Until the next time my sweet Bella.” He said to himself. Bella rode back in well before dark this time. She gave her horse to a stable boy and went into the castle. She went to the hallway that led to her room where she was met by Victoria.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Oh Bella! You’re back! I have wonderful news!” She grabbed Bella’s hands and led her into her room. “This just arrived.” She handed Bella a handwritten invitation. “What is this?” Bella asked as she looked at it. “It’s an invitation to Cair Paravel for a ball that the queens have planned. Apparently the oldest sister is pushing her brother, the High King, to pick a wife and she hopes that he will find her at this ball.” Said Victoria excitedly. Bella looked up at her, “Why would that excite me. I’m already getting married.” She said dryly. “If you are so set on Lionel then why do you want to keep taking rides out to the border?” she teased. “That’s different. Peter is just a common man that I enjoy talking to greatly. Nothing will ever come of it, nothing ever could.” She said sadly. “Well I think you and Lionel should go, just to make an appearance. I hear the High King is very handsome. Maybe you two will fall madly in love, have one passionate night together, and then he will fight Lionel for your hand!” said Victoria as she fell back on Bella’s bed.
“Oh Victoria, you’re such a silly romantic. Things like that don’t happen.” Said Bella realistically. “No, I don’t think I want to go all the way to Cair Paravel to meet another handsome royal that I will never marry.” She said. “You are no fun some days.” Teased Victoria. “The High King has a younger brother that I hear is also quiet good looking. It could be really interesting.” She begged. “You go Tor. You go meet the kings and tell me how wonderful they were when you get home.” “Oh Bella, please come too. You know I have no fun at these events unless you are there.” “I just don’t want to, I really don’t.” she finalized. “Well alright, but if one of the kings falls madly in love with me instead of you don’t cry on my shoulder.” She teased again.
Bella waved to Victoria as the carriage pulled away. Victoria had tried for over a week to convince Bella to attend the big ball in Cair Paravel, but she just wouldn’t change her mind. She just wanted to sit home, in the silence, and immerse herself in a book. She waited until Victoria’s carriage was all the way out of the gates before she went back to her room. It was a warm night so she took her book outside with candles, and snuggled on her couch under the beautiful flowering tree. Victoria arrived in Narnia a short time later. She was escorted off the carriage and led up imposing steps to a beautiful castle. She, herself, had never been to Cair Paravel before and she was stunned by its size and beauty. She slowly walked into the great hall to see elegant dresses quickly flying past her as couples danced. Up in the front of the room she could vaguely see a raised platform where she assumed the kings and queens were sitting. She desperately wanted to see the High King who she had heard so much of. She pushed her away around through the room. She ducked behind a column close to the thrones to take a closer look. First she saw a younger girl, probably about thirteen, with fiery red hair and bright eyes. She was talking with an older woman who must have been her sister. The woman had striking blue eyes and dark hair that fell down to her waist. They were giggling as the older woman nudged the man next to her. Victoria turned her attention to him. She figured this must be the High King’s brother. He was a tall, deep chested man. He had dark hair and mysterious eyes. She was intrigued by him greatly. He ignored his sister’s teasing as he turned to converse with his brother.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That’s when Victoria first laid eyes on the High King. He was taller than his brother, with broader shoulders. He had a captivating smile, deep sensitive blue eyes and a mess of blonde hair. He sat on his throne looking out over the people in front of him. He looked regal and magnificent, but kind and gentle at the same time. She couldn’t break her stare away from him. Suddenly, she felt a tap on her back. She turned to see one of her good friends behind her. “Oh Rachel you scared me.” She said. “I’m so sorry Tor, how have you been?” “I’m wonderful, yourself?” She returned. “Doing a lot better since I saw the High King.” She giggled. “Isn’t he handsome? So much more than I heard.” “Oh really? Well I heard that he was very good looking, but he is more complex than I imagined.” “Meaning?” “Well, look into his eyes. There is some serious thought going on behind those eyes. You can tell he is troubled, but he can’t exactly figure out why. His siblings are oblivious to it, they simple think he is sick of the ball already. But no, that’s not it…there is more to him.” She said. Rachel looked shocked. “You surprise me Victoria! When did you become so gifted at reading people?” “I’ve had a lot of practice lately.” She said simply. Victoria continued to watch the High King, waiting to see if she could sneak a dance with him to find out what he was thinking. Finally her chance came and she pounced. Within seconds she found herself being swept around the room.
“I’m Victoria your highness.” She said politely as they danced. “Nice to meet you Victoria, I’m Peter.” He answered. The name caught her ear, but she shrugged it off. “Where do you live Victoria?” “Archenland.” She answered. Peter thought, “That’s where Bella lives. But this girl is nobility, she wouldn’t know her.” He sighed. “That’s a beautiful country.” They continued to make small talk until the dance was over. After the made their bows and parted Victoria ran back to Rachel. “So did you find out what’s wrong?” Rachel asked anxiously. “He’s in love.” She stated.
Victoria arrived home extremely late the following evening. She burst into Bella’s room and jumped onto her bed. “Bella, Bella! Wake up!” she shook her friend out of sleep. “What happened Victoria? Is something wrong?” Bella asked still half asleep. “Wrong? No, nothing is wrong. Everything is wonderful.” She replied dreamily. “How was the ball?” Bella asked as she sat up in her bed. “It was amazing. Cair Paravel is the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen. The queens were generous and stunning.” “What about the kings?” Victoria smirked out of the corner of her mouth. “The younger king’s name is King Edmund. He has dark hair and eyes and is extremely good looking.” She told Bella. “And the High King?” Bella asked anxiously. “Oh Bella, I have never seen a better man. He is tall and built with blonde hair and captivating blue eyes.” Bella soaked in the vision. “I danced with him.” Victoria boasted. “There was much emotion behind his eyes, but I have never met a better man.” She said again. “Emotion? What do you mean?” Bella asked curiously. “He’s in love, but something more bothers him. It was hard to tell what he was thinking, but he’s a marvelous dancer.” She teased. Bella settled back into her pillows and sighed sadly. “What is it Bella?” Victoria asked as she held her friend’s hand. “Nothing, I’m alright. I’m so glad you enjoyed yourself.” “You seem sad Bella.”

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “How could I possibly be sad? Lionel has been gone for days and you’re home. I’ve never felt lighter in my heart.” She said with a smile. Victoria smiled back. “I will let you sleep Bella. I will see you in the morning.” She kissed Bella’s cheek and left the room. Bella woke up excited the next morning. With Lionel gone it had made seeing Peter much easier. She dressed quickly and saddled her horse. She rode to her spot under the tree. She dismounted her horse and saw that Peter was already sitting under the tree. casually. He greeted her back and helped her with the blanket. He flopped down on the blanket and shut his eyes. Bella sat down next to him. They had seen each other almost everyday that week. After they talked about their general topics Bella remembered something. “Oh, wasn’t your sister’s big gathering the other night?” she asked. He still had his eyes closed as he nodded. “So that’s why you are so tired today.” Bella said. “I’m sorry I’m so quiet. I am exhausted.” He said truthfully. She lay on her side propping herself up on her hand. “It’s alright. I understand. So, there were a lot of people there?” “Oh yes.” He said quietly. “A lot of ladies?” she teased. He nodded again with a smile on his face. “Did you dance with them?” “Of course.” He responded. She pretended to pout. “Were they very beautiful?” “Many of them were yes, but none of them even compared to you.” He said smiling at her. She laughed. “Don’t tease Peter.” He propped himself up and look at her seriously. “I’m not Bella. You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.”
She blushed and looked away. He kept his eyes on her. Slowly, he leaned in. He let his body take over and he kissed her. She didn’t pull away or even try. Bella indulged in his slow kisses which were getting more and more passionate. Bella fell back on the blanket under Peter’s weight. Neither of them resisted their feelings. Peter broke away for a moment. He looked down at Bella, brushing a piece of hair away from her face. “This is crazy.” She whispered. “I know, but it feels right.” Peter said back. Bella smiled and nodded as Peter leaned in to kiss her again. Just as she felt his warm lips touch hers a loud sound split the sky. They both shot up quickly. The horn sounded again. “What was that?” Peter asked with confusion in his voice. “Oh no…” Bella said quietly. She knew that the horn sounding like that hailed the return of a lord, and not just any lord…Lionel. “I have to go.” She said very flustered as she got up. “Bella, what’s wrong?” he sounded desperate. “Nothing, I just have to go.” She said as she got on her horse. “I’m so sorry Peter.” She turned her horse and began to gallop. “Bella!” Peter shouted after her, but she continued to ride. She flew back into the castle walls and dismounted in a hurry. She snuck up the back stairs that led into her room. Victoria was already there ready to help her change. “I told him that you were taking a bath, and that you would meet him for dinner as soon as you were ready.” She reported as he helped her take off her dress. “If he finds out I was riding again he is bound to know. Now I’m going to have to take a bath so I don’t smell like a horse.” Bella said frantically.
“Or Peter.” Victoria teased. “Just help me!” Victoria pushed Bella into the bathroom and began to douse her with water. They both quickly ran soap all over Bella’s body and hair. She was clean and dry in fifteen minutes. “Let’s get out one of your nicer dresses, one with a low neckline.” Said Victoria as she went through Bella’s dresses. “Why?” she asked curiously. “Lionel won’t ask what you did today if he is…distracted by something else.” She said mischievously. “Naughty girl.” Teased Bella. Victoria picked out a deep wine colored velvet gown. It was tight to all of Bella’s beautiful curves. It had fitted sleeves until the wrists where the material dropped to her legs. It was trimmed with gold and left her chest bare and daunting. She quickly twisted half of her long hair up with dark flowers. “There, perfect. There is no possibility of him asking you anything.” Victoria said confidently. “Now go! You are late!” She gave Bella a push out the door. Bella glided into the dining hall and immediately Lionel’s mouth began to water. He swallowed hard and moved toward her. He slowly raised her hand to his lips. After kissing it he inhaled her intoxicating sent. “I missed you Bella.” He finally spoke.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I missed you as well.” She lied. They sat down and ate. Bella tried to eat quickly, but she could feel Lionel’s eyes moving all over her. After they finished she excused herself and began to walk briskly down the hallway. A few seconds later she heard heavy footsteps behind her. As she was passing Lionel’s room she felt a hard hand grab her arm. Suddenly, she felt herself being pressed against the wall. “Bella, did I tell you that you look enchanting tonight?” Lionel asked as he twisted her hair and kept her forcefully against the wall. She squirmed. “Lionel, let me go.” She pleaded. “What’s the rush my love, after all…we haven’t seen each other in days.” He said as he began to kiss her neck. She was panicking. There was no one around, and he would hurt her if she screamed. She wanted Peter so badly. Then, she felt his weight press on her harder.
Chapter 10 Peter rode hard back to Cair Paravel. He was angry and confused. If Bella didn’t feel the same way about him then why did she let him start to kiss her? He quickly dismounted and handed his horse off to a stable boy. He walked into the castle and was instantly met by Susan. “Peter, you cannot keep disappearing like this! We needed you here today!” she said angrily. “Please Susan, not now. I am in no mood.” He snapped. Lucy and Edmund, who were standing next to Susan, looked at each other nervously. “Well, I’m sorry that you’re in ‘no mood’ but you are the High King! You must be in Cair Paravel to welcome representatives from visiting countries, not off riding somewhere. What is it that you do all day anyway?” she demanded. “I enjoy the silence!” he shouted back. He turned and stormed away from her. Susan huffed. “I’ll go talk to him.” Offered Edmund. He followed his brother. Lucy put a gentle hand on Susan’s shoulder. “He’s just having a bad day Sue. It’s not easy for him to carry the weight of this entire kingdom.” She pointed out. Susan sighed. “He doesn’t seem happy. He must marry…and soon.” “Why don’t we go see if we can get some tea? That will calm you.” Said Lucy trying to divert Susan from thinking of Peter’s marriage needs. “Alright.” She conceded. Peter threw the door to his bedroom open and rushed in. He threw off his heavy belt and grunted in anger. Edmund slowly entered the room trying not to laugh.
“What do you want?” Peter asked upon seeing his brother. “Calm down please. I haven’t done anything to you.” Edmund said defensively. “You’re right. I’m sorry.” Peter said as he sat down on his large bed. “What happened?” Edmund asked as he came further into the room. “I kissed her Ed!” he exclaimed as he put his face in his hands. “Who? Bella?” Edmund asked confused. “No, the maid that I just passed in the hallway…yes Bella!” “I didn’t know you were still seeing her.” Said Edmund. A small smile spread onto his face. “So that’s where you keep heading off to.” He began to laugh. Peter looked up at him glaring. “Alright, I’m sorry. So why would a kiss be so grieving to you?” “Because, she seemed like she was enjoying it. Everything felt perfect, but then we heard the sound of a distant horn and she just ran. It was so odd. She couldn’t give me any explanation.” He told Edmund. “Hmmm…that is odd. Maybe it’s a sign.” “What do you mean?” “Well, she is a commoner. In reality you two could never be together. I would take this as a sign.” “Maybe you are right.” Peter thought hard. “Of course I’m right.” Joked Edmund. “I say you just pick one of the hundreds of beautiful ladies Susan has already approved and settle down.” Peter stared out of a window. “But I think I love her Ed.” He admitted. “It’s just a feeling, it’ll pass as soon as you’re in the arms of some other woman. Trust me.” Peter nodded his head at his brother. “Thank you Ed.” “Goodnight Pete.” Edmund left the room. Peter continued to think. “Maybe he’s right. I wish I knew. Aslan, I could really use your help right now.” He said as he put his head down. He couldn’t get Bella’s striking face out of his hind…or the taste of her kiss off his lips.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lionel walked out of Bella’s room twenty minutes later. He had a sick grin on his face. He left Bella lying on her bed crying bitter tears. She pulled her dress back up and wiped her eyes…but she couldn’t stop the flood of tears that just kept coming. “Father…” she sobbed. “Please come back to me, I need you. I cannot do this on my own.” She lay on her stomach crying into her pillow. Victoria heard her crying and walked into her room. “Bella? Sweetheart, what is wrong?” she asked as she sat on the bed next to her. She straightened out Bella’s long blonde hair. “Lionel…he, he…” she tried to talk but her tears were drowning her words. Suddenly, Victoria knew. “Oh no…oh no. How could this happen? I should have been here, I should have stayed with you. Oh Bella, I’m so sorry.” She began to cry. “There was nothing you could have done. To refuse him would have meant death.” She grasped her bed covers hard. “I miss my father.” She cried harder. “Oh Bella, I wish there was something I could do for you.” Victoria said sadly. “And what’s worse, I’ve lost Peter.” Bella sobbed. “What do you mean?” her friend asked. “He kissed me today, but then I heard the horn announcing Lionel’s return. I left him…with no explanation. He will never speak to me again.” She said through her tears. “Of course he will Bella.” Victoria tried reassuring her. “I saw the hurt and confusion in his face.” She said seriously. “No, he will have nothing else to do with me.” She put her face down into her pillow and released more tears. Victoria tried to hold back her own tears as she gently rubbed her dear friend’s back for comfort.
Bella woke the next morning to see storm clouds outside her window. She had cried herself to sleep in the wee hours of the night. She rubbed her eyes as she looked out the window. It started to rain. She heard a light tap on the door. Victoria walked in with a tea tray. “How are you Bella?” she asked with concern. Bella didn’t answer. She conveyed her feelings with her eyes. “I understand.” Said Victoria lovingly. “Come over here and have some tea.” Bella quietly sat down at her small table while Victoria fixed her tea. She pushed her a plate with a scone on it. “Eat something dear, it will make you feel better.” Bella stared blankly at the food in front of her. “Bella please…” Victoria pleaded. “I’m going out.” Bella said harshly. “What?” “I have to see if Peter is there.” She said. “Bella, it’s pouring. You’ll catch a terrible cold.” “Victoria, if I don’t go I will regret it forever. I’ve made up my mind.” Bella got up to change. Victoria didn’t bother arguing with her any longer. She knew she couldn’t change her mind. Bella walked out to the stable with Victoria. She began to mount her horse. “What if Lionel asks where you are?” Victoria asked nervously. “Tell him I am visiting a sick friend in town and he need not worry. I’ll be back tonight.” She said with a sick feeling in her stomach. Victoria nodded and helped Bella onto the horse.
Peter woke to the same rain clouds. He bad been trying hard to take Edmund’s advice and forget Bella, but he just couldn’t do it. He dressed and joined his siblings for breakfast. “Dismal weather.” Said Susan as she ate her toast. The others nodded in agreement. “What are you doing today Peter?” she asked. Peter looked up from his plate. “Um, probably going out to check on a few close towns, just to make sure all is well.” He said. “I’ll go with you.” Piped in Edmund. “No Ed, I’ll go alone.” He said making a face at his brother. Edmund caught on and was quiet. “But its raining.” Said Lucy simply. “Its alright, I’ll be fine.” Peter said. “Oh Peter, couldn’t it wait for better weather. We cannot afford to have you sick.” Susan stated. “I’ll be fine.” He repeated. “Well you better be because Prince Lionel of Archenland is coming tomorrow to meet with you. You haven’t forgotten have you?” asked Susan. Peter had actually forgotten all about the Prince’s visit. “Of course not. I’ll be there and I’ll be healthy.” He promised. He hadn’t been thinking of any of his responsibilities lately. Bella consumed his every waking moment. He finished breakfast, went out to the stables, and saddled his horse. Within minutes he was soaked through. “She has to be there.” He muttered to himself as he rode hard. When Peter arrived at the stream he could barely see through the hard rain. He slowly made his way under the tree where he saw a hooded figure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bella turned to see Peter soaked and shocked. Neither of them really expected to see the other. Bella was also completely soaked. She started to walk towards him. Neither of them spoke. Words weren’t necessary. Peter’s pace quickened into a slow run. He slammed into Bella taking her face in his hands and kissed her passionately. She melted into him as he wrapped his arms all the way around her back. They held each other tightly for several long minutes. They broke apart and were both completely speechless. Peter struggled to say something. “Bella I…” he paused looking for the words. “I understand.” She said quietly. He pulled her into a tight hug. “I’m so sorry about yesterday.” She said. She wanted to explain more, but she continued to hold her secret. The rain fell hard on them. “Bella, I can’t stay but I had to see if you were alright. You scared me yesterday, running off like that.” He said as he continued to hold her. “I wish I could explain, but I just can’t yet.” He understood. He too was holding back much from her. Suddenly, they both became aware of the time. “I have to go.” Peter said regretfully. Bella nodded. “Peter, will I see you again?” Peter took her in his arms and held her tightly once again. “Of course.” He said calmly. “Bella…I love you.” She looked up into his clear blue eyes and smiled. “I love you too.” She whispered. He was bursting with joy to hear her say those words. The rain came down harder. “We should go, before we catch cold.” She said. He leaned in to kiss her again, this time knowing that she loved him. They laughed a little as their kiss ended. He helped her onto her horse.
“Until I see you again.” He said after he kissed her hand. “Goodbye Peter.” She smiled and began her journey home. Peter mounted his horse and rode hard back to Cair Paravel. He walked back into the castle soaked to the bone. Susan met him. “Peter, you’re drenched!” she said with a worried tone. “I know, I’ll be fine though. I just need a warm bath and some dry clothes.” He said smiling at his sister. “Go ahead and relax Peter. Prince Lionel will be here tomorrow morning.” He nodded acknowledging the information and turned to his room. He entered his room and told his servants to draw his bath. The three girls all turned to each other smiling as they left the room. Peter’s clothes clung tightly to his body due to their wetness. He ignored the girls and took his wet, heavy clothing off. He slowly slid into the warm soapy water in his tub. He let out a heavy sigh of relief. “Thank you girls, you can leave now.” He said politely to the servants who were still standing outside his bathroom door. They giggled and left. He rolled his eyes, chuckling to himself and put his weary head down on the edge of the tub. He let the water relax his aching muscles and warm his frozen body. A large smile spread onto his face. “She loves me…” he said to himself quietly.
Bella came back into Anvard also soaked and freezing. She quickly made her way up to her room where Victoria was waiting. “Oh you poor thing.” She said as she saw the state of her friend. “Let’s get you into a warm bath.” She called in several servants to fill Bella’s bath with warm water and beautiful smelling soaps. She helped Bella take off her wet clothes. Bella eased her body into the warm water and let out a small sigh as she shut her eyes. Victoria began to lather her hair with soap. “So, tell me.” “He was there, and he was wonderful.” Bella said unable to wipe the smile from her face. “What happened?” Victoria asked anxiously. “He told me that he loves me, and he really meant it.” Bella said happily. “Oh Bella…” Victoria’s voice was bursting with the pure joy she felt for her friend.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 12 Bella woke up that morning feeling happy. She knew that Lionel was gone and that Peter loved her. She slowly stretched out her arms and sighed. As she continued to wake she felt pain in her head and chest. After her long stretch she let out a violent sneeze. She put her head back down on her pillow and moaned. “Great, I’m sick.” She said out loud. Victoria walked into her room just as she sneezed again. “Oh dear, I guess we didn’t get you in that warm water soon enough.” She said as she sat down on the bed next to her. She felt her forehead. “Ah yes, you have a fever. You won’t be going anywhere today.” Victoria said sternly. “But Peter…” “Can wait until you are feeling better.” Victoria finished. Bella slumped down into her fluffy covers. “This is so unfair.” She pouted like a little child. Victoria chuckled. “I’ll go get some soup. You stay there.” She said pointing her finger at Bella. Bella got settled into her bed and looked out the window at the beautiful day. She thought of Peter and what he might be doing. Was he thinking of her?
Indeed he was. He too had woken up to the beautiful sunshine coming off the sea. He had quickly dressed and went to join his siblings for breakfast. He was lucky and had not gotten sick from the day before. After all, he had promised Susan he wouldn’t. He seemed unusually cheery. “Good morning family!” he shouted as he bounced into the dinning hall. He took his seat and was quickly served his food. “Thank you so much.” He said sweetly to the servant girl who was serving him. She blushed and scampered away. Edmund, Susan, and Lucy all stared at him as he ate his eggs. “Isn’t it lovely out?” he asked looking out the large windows in the room. “Look at the way the sunlight is reflecting off the water.” “What is with you?” Edmund asked. “What do you mean?” Peter asked casually as he continued to eat. “You’re so happy.” Said Lucy with a quirky smile. “Am I not allowed to be happy?” Peter asked. They realized he wasn’t going to tell them anything. Susan decided to shift the conversation to business. “You have managed to remember that…” Peter cut her off. “Prince Lionel of Archenland is coming today? Why yes Sue, I have.” He said smiling at his sister. Edmund and Lucy laughed at their brother’s mood. Susan was a little less than amused. “Well, it is also possible for you to act kingly in front of him? Or shall I conduct the meeting?” she snapped. Peter became serious. “I’m capable…thank you Sue.” “He should be here very soon so hurry up and finish.” She said quickly. She got up and left the room. “What is wrong with her?” Peter asked Edmund and Lucy.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “She knows you have a secret, and its driving her mad.” Said Lucy snickering. Peter and Edmund laughed hard. Lionel rode proudly through the gates of Cair Paravel. He walked briskly into the castle where he was immediately met by the High King. Peter looked over the man in front of him. He saw his dark mannerism and was uneasy. “Welcome Prince Lionel.” He said. Lionel bowed his head as little as he could. “It is an honor King Peter.” “Shall we?” Peter said making a motion with his hand to walk into the room they were standing outside of. Lionel followed his hand into the study. Peter had maps of Narnia and Archenland spread on the table in front of them. “So Prince Lionel, you have come to secure peace with Narnia?” Peter asked. “Yes sire, Archenland and Narnia have long been in peace with each other.” He said. “Yes, I am aware.” Peter said shortly. “Well, the king has recently passed and I am his successor so I felt the need to meet with you personally to ensure that the pact you made with him is still binding.” Lionel said. Peter was a bit upset. “The king is dead? How did I not hear of this until now?” “I’m sure I sent messengers to all the surrounding nations.” Lionel said with an attitude. “And how are you his successor, I don’t remember the king having a son?” Peter said with suspicion.
“I am to marry his only daughter Princess Annabelle.” He said. Peter flinched at the name. There was no way, it just couldn’t be. He dismissed the thought almost as quickly as it entered his head. “I see. Well Prince Lionel, I can ensure you that as long as you keep the agreement I made with the late king than all well be well between Narnia and Archenland. And congratulations on your future marriage.” He said as politely as he could. “You will of course honor us with your presence at the ceremony?” Lionel offered. Peter bit his lip. He really did not want to go, but as a king he really couldn’t turn down another royal’s invitation. “Of course, my family and I would love nothing more than to see the new King and Queen of Archenland be wed.” he replied. Lionel forced a smile. “It is settled then. I will send word when my bride is ready.” He said. Peter nodded. “Thank you for your time King Peter.” Lionel said as he bowed again. Peter returned the gesture and showed him out of the castle. He went up to his room and sat down in his chair. How odd was it that they future Queen of Archenland had the same name of his mysterious love? He tried to shrug the thought away again. He left his room to find his siblings. He caught Lucy in the hall. “Lu, tell Susan that we are soon to attend Prince Lionel’s marriage to the Princess of Anvard. We will all need new clothes. That will perk her up.” He teased. Lucy smiled and nodded then trotted off to deliver her news. Peter caught sight of Edmund. “Ed!” he called for him. His brother turned and walked up to him. “Can I talk to you?” Peter asked anxiously.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 13 Lionel strutted back into Anvard late that night. He went immediately to Bella’s room. She was reading in her bed. “Hello Bella dear.” He said as he moved closer to her. “Hello Lionel.” She said not looking up from her book. He sat down on the side of her bed and stared at her intently. “Did everything go well with the High King?” she asked still not looking up. “Yes it did indeed, our peace treaty has been confirmed.” She nodded. “And he and his family will be attending the wedding.” He finished. “Our wedding?” she asked in shock finally looking up. He held her hands. “Yes our wedding. I do not want to wait much longer Bella. The people need to feel secure, they need a king and queen again.” She looked back down and sighed. She knew her people did need leadership but she couldn’t get Peter out of her mind. “Bella?” she heard Lionel’s voice questioning her. She had to stop being selfish. “Yes Lionel, you’re right. We will wed when you please.” She answered feeling indescribable pain in her chest. He grinned. “Wonderful my dear. We shall wed on the next full moon then.” Bella’s heart sunk further. The next full moon was not even two weeks away. Lionel leaned in to kiss her. His kiss was long and greedy. She tried to pull away but he was too strong. He forced her down on the bed still kissing her lustfully. She broke away just long enough to speak. “Lionel please…” she pleaded as she pushed him hard. He took his weight off her. “Alright, you win Bella. Goodnight.” He briskly walked out of the room looking upset. Bella let out a sight of relief and settled into sleep.
“You don’t think it’s her do you?” Edmund asked after listening to his brother. “It cannot be. Bella is a commoner.” Peter said. “Do you know that for certain?” Edmund asked. Peter hesitated. “Peter, there is a lot about this woman that you don’t know.” “I realize that, but I lover her just the same.” Peter replied honestly. “Maybe you should try to restrain your feelings a bit until you know more.” Edmund said wisely. Peter nodded, but his heart had decided. The next day Peter ate breakfast quickly and went out for a ride. He had to see Bella. It was time that the mysteries of their love were sorted out. He rode hard and arrived at the tree, but she wasn’t there.
